Manafort, who helmed the Trump campaign during the summer of 2016, had already been indicted in October on a charges of conspiracy against the United States, failure to register as a foreign agent and several financial crimes, including conspiracy to launder money.

U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Tuesday stepped up pressure on two former Trump campaign aides to cooperate in his probe into possible collusion with Russian Federation, unsealing a criminal charge against a lawyer for lying to Mueller's investigators.

Gates' initial defense lawyers withdrew from representing him in the Russian Federation investigation earlier this month following his decision to bring on attorney Tom Green, who was reportedly working to negotiate a plea deal for his client.
