While it is unclear how the mid-sea squabble started, footage obtained by Australian radio station 3AWRadio shows security personnel scrambling to break up a crowd of people who were throwing punches and tackling passengers to the ground.

Carnival Cruise Line says police were requested to the Carnival Legend and "remove a family group of passengers".

It is still unclear if the family will face any charges for the fight, though Marine Area Command officials are now investigating it.

The Carnival Legend cruise ship has been on a 10-day tour of the South Pacific.

"He rang me about 1am this morning and said, "please dad, please dad, call the federal police", Mr Barkho told 3AW.

His son said "a lot of people are bleeding, a lot of people down".

A group of cruise passengers on the Carnival Legend have been behaving badly onboard by terrorizing other guests, getting into fights and making threats.

"There were limited and isolated events with the family in question", she said.

Seven people - six men and one 37-year-old Russian woman - were arrested and escorted off the cruise.
