"It took a brutal 13 hours, but the ANC's national executive committee has chose to recall President Jacob Zuma as head of state", the Times newspaper said citing unnamed sourcesOther media reported that the party will write to Zuma ordering him to stand down as president of Africa's most advanced economy, after he had asked for a few more months in office.

Meanwhile, after a special meeting yesterday at Irene outside Pretoria, the ANC's National Executive Committee (NEC) has, according to reports, chose to recall Zuma from the Presidency.

President of the ANC, Cyril Ramaphosa at a stage left the meeting at St.Georges Hotel, outside of Pretoria to discuss with Zuma.

Magashule said he had not given Zuma a deadline to respond to the recall demand, underlining the ANC's weakness in the face of the 75-year-old party veteran's ongoing determination to cling to power.

South Africa's ruling African National Congress party announced Tuesday that it would press President Jacob Zuma to resign despite his adamant refusal to relinquish his post amid corruption scandals.

An opposition-sponsored motion of no confidence in Zuma had been scheduled for February 22, but the ruling party joined opposition leaders in pushing for the date to be moved to this week in a rare show of unity among rival political factions.

South African President Jacob Zuma broke his silence Wednesday to disagree with the ruling party's order to resign and say he'd done nothing wrong, setting the stage for his nearly certain ouster in a parliamentary vote on Thursday after years of corruption scandals.

Another committee member told AFP that Zuma's response was "hogwash" and that the president had asked for three more months in office.

Zuma's position as president became a problem after Ramaphosa won a hotly contested election to the presidency of the party in December.

When Zuma returned, the meeting still lasted another three hours. Presidents in South Africa are chosen by ruling party lawmakers in the lower house of parliament, not by voters directly.

"I think Jacob Zuma is nearly daring the ANC to remove him through a motion of no confidence because he knows that would be damaging for unity in the party", analyst Abdul Waheed Patel told AFP.

Meanwhile, the African National Congress (ANC) party has given Zuma until the end of the day to resign.

The ANC caucus has been instructed to put in motion "a parliamentary process", Mashatile told journalists. "It would draw out this transition period even longer and South Africa would have a longer period of uncertainty about its leadership". The president also faces almost 800 corruption allegations stemming from an arms deal during the 1990s.

"One of Zuma's sons works for the Guptas, as do the children of other high ranking officials".

The President's term had been due to end next year.
