Student dies outside Missoula nightclub following crushing incident

  • A 19-year-old student has died after a fence reportedly fell over outside a nightclub in the Walkergate area of Durham

Witnesses reportedly described how she became trapped under a fence as students queued to get into the club, before doormen tried in vain to resuscitate her.

Detective Superintendent Kevin Weir, from Durham Constabulary, said: 'This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of Olivia during this incredibly sad time.

The 20-year-old woman suffered a "serious head injury" near Missoula nightclub in Durham, England on Wednesday night.

The nightclub has been contacted for comment.

The club, located in the city's Walkergate, was hosting an event described by its organisers as Durham's "biggest student night", which Olivia is believed to have been attending with members of the Durham University Sailing Club.

Eyewitnesses on a student night out said they saw her get "trapped under a fence" just before midnight.

Police, who were called to the scene at 11.53pm last night, have launched an investigation into circumstances leading up to her death.

Professor David Held, master of University College, Durham, said: "The staff and students of University College, Durham acutely feel the loss of Olivia Burt". She arrived last autumn to begin reading natural science with glowing references from her school where she was regarded in the highest possible terms. She was part of the British Sailing team in the European Championships.

"We understand that some of our students may need to seek support and we advise that they contact their College Student Support Office in the first instance. It is hard to come to terms with her loss, and we will miss her greatly".

Chris Atherton, the senior high-performance manager of the Royal Yachting Association, paid tribute to Burt's "drive, determination and good sportsmanship" as a sailor.

"Until that is concluded we are unable to comment further".
