The invitation was delivered by Kim Yo Jong, the sister of the North Korean leader, when she and other members of the North Korean delegation ate lunch with Moon at the presidential palace.

Kim Jo Jong carried a blue folder adorned with a seal, which was later confirmed to have contained a private message from Kim Jong Un himself.

In a statement, Moon said he planned to set the conditions to allow the talks to happen. The gold medal for mix-ups goes to the Kenyan delegate to a United Nations conference held in Pyeongchang in 2014, who mistakenly flew to Pyongyang instead.

The delegation, which includes Kim's sister, Kim Yo-jong, is in South Korea for the Winter Olympics.

Katie Ormerod was an outside shot for gold either in the slopestyle or the big air but suffered two bad training falls, breaking first her wrist and then more seriously her heel, forcing her withdrawal. As a sign of her status, the elder Kim Yong Nam offered her the seat of honor at the airport meeting, but she politely declined.

"South Korea has some hard homework to solve regarding some countries", Moon told the gathering of some 200 VIPs at the reception before Pence arrived.

Pita Taufatofua, who competed in taekwondo in the 2016 Rio Olympics and will compete in cross-country skiing in Pyeongchang, carries the flag of Tonga during the opening ceremony. Instead of eating with Moon and the other dignitaries, Pence ate with the American athletes.

At the Olympic Stadium's VIP box, Kim Yo Jong and North Korea's nominal head of state, Kim Yong Nam, took their place among world dignitaries including US Vice-President Mike Pence, who sat less than 1m away and seemed to make an effort not to acknowledge them. Those photos quickly went viral.

Mr Pence stayed seated when South and North Korean athletes marched together under a unified flag, and also skipped a dinner with the North Korean delegation.

Jarrod Agen, the vice president's spokesman, on Saturday tweeted a recap of Pence's visit so far.

Kim Yo Jong has been rapidly rising within the North's power structure and is believed to be in charge of shaping her brother's public persona.

European Union urges Israel to rebuild demolished Palestinian classrooms
Tensions have risen since US President Donald Trump's controversial recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital on December 6. On Monday, a terrorist fatally stabbed 29-year-old Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal outside the settlement of Ariel.

The Winter Olympics have driven a rapid rapprochement on the Korean peninsula, where fears of a new conflict mounted past year as the nuclear-armed North carried out a series of missile tests and its most powerful atomic blast to date. Pyongyang has repeatedly said it needs a deterrent to stop the United States attacking it.

President Donald Trump's administration has taken a hard line on North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile program, saying there is no room for negotiations unless Pyongyang abandons it.

However, few officials have said this in quite the colorful language that Trump has used.

This has exposed the gaps between Seoul and Washington in how to deal with North Korea.

The game was a mismatch pretty much from the opening faceoff, though you would have never known it by the constant noise made by tightly choreographed North Korean cheerleaders and the much looser fans from the South.
