He replaces Dick Advocaat, who oversaw the country's unsuccessful World Cup qualification campaign for Russian Federation this summer.

Announcing his appointment, the Royal Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) said Koeman has "just signed a contract which ties him to Oranje with immediate effect up to and including the 2022 World Cup" in Qatar.

The KNVB have also appointed Nico-Jan Hoogma, who was general manager at Eredivisie side Heracles Almelo, as director of football. His long-term contract will take in the new UEFA Nations League, Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup campaign.

The Netherlands also missed out on UEFA EURO 2016 prior to Russian Federation 2018, so Koeman's task will also be to get the Dutch back to the continental finals, which will be held in 12 cities in 12 different host countries.

During that time the national team slumped from one disappointment to another.

During his playing career, Koeman made 78 appearances for the Dutch national side.

"Koeman's sacking at Everton came as a gift from heaven for the KNVB", the popular De Telegraaf said.

Koeman, 54, has been out of work since being sacked by Everton in October after a string of defeats saw the Toffees fall into the relegation zone.
