Jammu:Two policemen were left injured after terrorists attacked Shri Maharaja Hari Singh hospital in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

The attack ended with the terrorists escaping into the narrow lanes and bylanes of downtown Srinagar, a police official said. In the resulting confusion one terrorist identified as Abu Hanzulla alias Naveed Jatt managed to escape while the other five were apprehended by the police.

But while entering the hospital premises, two to three militants waiting for them opened fire injuring two cops.

Sources told DH it was a pre-planned attack to help Naveed flee from the police custody when he was brought to the hospital for a check-up. He had also led a militant attack in Bongam Shopian as well, police added. "Six detainees were being brought from the Central Jail (to the hospital)".

Meanwhile, DIG central Kashmir GH Bhat said that rifle was not snatched by Hanzullah.

TASS reported that "according to preliminary information, the plane was shot down from a portable anti-aircraft missile system". The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the downing of the Su-25 and said the pilot was killed in fighting with "terrorists".

Police officer Ghulam Hasan Bhatt said two police officers sustained bullet injuries in the attack and later succumbed to their injuries in Srinagar.

The DIG said that an alert has been sounded by issuing advisory across the police in Srinagar district to intensify the searches to trace out the fleeing inmate and his associates.

The officials said that Naveed belonged to LeT's Wasim group and was involved in a number of terror acts including the killing of a police official and a schoolteacher before his arrest.
