Several students were wounded after a single gunshot was sacked from inside a 12-year-old girl's backpack in a middle school classroom, police said Friday.

Four students were injured in Thursday's morning shooting at Sal Castro Middle School in the Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Police officials said the shooting suspect is about 12-year-old and the weapon of the shooter has been recovered by police. "They thought it was a fake gun".

The boy who was shot in the head was in stable condition at LAC-USC Medical Center following the incident and is expected to make a full recovery. The girl holding the firearm "didn't mean to" shoot the 15-year-old girl, he said, according to the station. Police initially said they had arrested a suspect (later identified as a 12-year-old girl) but later shifted their language and described the girl as a "person of interest".
