Three people have been killed in southern California after a helicopter crashed into a house shortly after taking off. The Newport Beach Police Department said four people were aboard the Robinson 44 helicopter when it went down.

Two people were transported to a local hospital and their conditions are unknown. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

Police say the fifth person involved was on the ground at the time of the crash, however it's not clear if they were inside the house at the time.

A helicopter crashed Tuesday afternoon in a residential neighborhood about a mile southeast of John Wayne Airport, authorities said. First responders are at the scene and officials asked the public to avoid the nearby area.
