  • One attacker arrested amid ongoing gunfire in Kabul

Gunmen attacked an Army Garrison situated near a military academy in the Afghan capital Monday, killing at least five people -- the latest in a series of assaults that have rattled the country in recent weeks.

Over the past year, about 10,000 of the country's security forces have been killed and more than 16,000 others wounded, according to a senior Afghan government official.

Ministry of Defence officials said the five militants, armed with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic rifles, attacked the outpost near the well-defended academy just before dawn. Four were killed in the attack but one was arrested. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province.

Afghan Presidential Spokesman Shahhussain Murtazawi has confirmed the attack on Marshal Fahim Military University in Kabul and said the attackers have been restricted to the first gate of the academy.

Monday's attack started around 4 a.m., witnesses said, and fighting continued long after daybreak.

United Kingdom to 'maintain continuity' with European Union rules
Asked if that increased the risks of no-deal Brexit, the diplomat said yes, "in particular given the ticking clock". He said the chancellor's remarks had "overshadowed" his main point that May wants a deep trade deal with the EU.

Two were killed in a gun battle with troops, two others detonated their suicide vests and one was arrested by troops.

He said the attack targeted the unit guarding the military academy and not the facility itself.

The previous weekend at least 22 people died in an assault on the Intercontinental hotel in Kabul.

Both the Taliban and IS seem now to be focusing their energies on carrying out attacks in Kabul.

He says that Pakistan has shown previously that when they are criticised internationally it has reacted by means of the Taliban. Earlier two attacks were conducted by Taliban. He said the "Taliban must choose between Islam and terrorism".

The four previous attacks, according to Franco, including the ambulance attack, were all aimed at striking those who deal with the global community.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson condemned the "senseless" attack, insisting there can be "no tolerance for those who support or offer sanctuary to terrorist groups".

Former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad called for Ghani's government and its main political rival, powerful northern leader Atta Mohammad Noor, to "come together and resolve their differences".

The minister of interior did not disclose exact information regarding the number of the police personnel who have lost their lives in the attack.
