China on Thursday promised to take action against US -sanctioned companies if it sees "solid evidence" they illegally helped North Korea, while cautioning against the imposition of foreign laws on Chinese citizens.

As the North Korean women's ice hockey team arrived in the South to prepare for next month's winter Olympics, Pyongyang has issued a rousing call to all Koreans at home and overseas to achieve unification.

Twelve North Korean female hockey players crossed the heavily fortified border into South Korea on Thursday to form the rivals' first-ever unified Olympic team during next month's Pyeongchang Winter Games.

South Korea, a staunch US ally, is hoping the North's participation will allow it to host a successful Olympics and lead to broader dialogue over its nuclear weapons program.

By talking to South Korea, the North Koreans could dampen the commitment to a military option and encourage a wedge in the alliance with the United States.

Meanwhile, state media in North Korea has published a rare call for unification, but the statement also makes a demand. It said military drills with "outside forces" as being unhelpful - an apparent reference to joint U.S.

As NPR's Elise Hu reported earlier this week, many South Koreans have also expressed their dismay with joining Pyongyang in the games, reporting, "In Seoul, protesters Monday set fire to the North Korean flag and a photo of Kim Jong Un".

On a larger scale, the main opposition Liberty Korea Party criticized the liberal Moon administration as having allowed North Korea to steal the limelight at the upcoming PyeongChang Olympics by putting too much emphasis on the North's participation. "We're not there yet", she said.

The women's ice hockey squad will include 12 players and one official from North Korea alongside 23 South Korean players.

South Korea has sent a group of officials to North Korea to inspect preparations for a joint cultural event at the North's scenic Diamond Mountain and a practice session for the countries' non-Olympic skiers at the North's Masik ski resort the Koreas plan to hold before the start of the Olympics.

A poll in the South showed around 70% were opposed to the joint hockey team, claiming it will deprive their players of time on the rink.
