  • Facebook begins testing local news app

The concerns came after the platform pushed content published by Pages, including media organizations, into a separate feed called "Explore" in an experiment in several countries. Not only do they allow lower quality advertising, they also allow shady characters to not only house their operations on Facebook but they allow them to buy ads, which are then placed in the newsfeed. "For brands, this will mean more doing than saying". This will be done through updates to its ranking system so users have more opportunities to interact with "people they care about". "Pages making posts that people generally don't react to or comment on could see the biggest decreases in distribution. Pages whose posts prompt conversations between friends will see less of an effect", the blog post added. The company wants to encourage users to have more conversations with people they know, rather than passively consuming articles or videos.

Facebook plans to alert those living in the six cities about the new feature.

"As we roll this out, you'll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media", he stated.

Zuckerberg also noted that overall time spent on Facebook will likely decrease as a result of this change. "And if we do the right thing, I believe that will be good for our community and our business over the long term too".

The Facebook CEO announced the changes on the social network on Thursday evening, and it sounded like a warning for publishers and media partners that rely on the platform to reach audiences. Facebook, he said, had closely studied what kinds of posts had stressed or harmed users.
