Two injured in Stockholm subway station explosion

A man and a woman were injured near a Stockholm subway station Sunday after the man picked up an unidentified object from the ground that detonated in his hand, Swedish police said.

A police spokesman said a man died after picking up an object outside the Varby Gard station in Stockholm.

The couple had been cycling past the device when the man stopped to investigate it. "The woman who was with the man was several meters behind him", police officer Lars Alvarsjo told Swedish Television. "This is totally unacceptable", Alvarsjo said. The man and the woman simply "were at the wrong place and at the wrong time". It and an adjacent square were closed while police carried out checks.

He picked up an item from the ground that exploded, police say.

Authorities said they did not think the blast was related to a terrorist attack.
