Sean Payton Takes Out The Broom As Saints Celebrate Sweep vs. Panthers

08 January, 2018, 03:46 | Author: John Swanson
  • Carolina Panthers Cam Newton hugs New Orleans Saints Drew Brees before an NFL football game in Charlotte N.C. Sunday Sept. 24 2017. The Saints won 34-13

Payton downplays the regular-season wins over Carolina now, reminding everyone that the playoffs are a single game elimination tournament, but the Saints have to be in the Panthers head, if only just a little bit. He could have easily been the goat had the Panthers taken advantage of his questionable decision, but in the end his defense prevailed, and the Saints are going on. The Saints won both meetings in the regular season, and rather easily, too, but defeating a team three times in no season is no easy task.

Perhaps someone should take that broom and whack Payton over the head with it after he almost cost his team the game. The Panthers were 1-1 in those games and are 2-1 all-time in conference championship games.

Saints receiver Michael Thomas had five catches for 50 yards and a touchdown on New Orleans' opening drive, and rookie running back Alvin Kamara scored the first of his 14 touchdowns on a 25-yard run in the fourth quarter.

In the rematch, Brees was solid, while Newton was better than earlier in the season.

National Hockey League star gets chunk of beard ripped out in vicious fight
Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen, playing in his 100th game as a Leaf, stopped five of six Sharks in the shootout. Unfortunately for Thornton, who sports a very glorious beard, his facial hair got in the way of Kadri's grip.

Cam Newton rolled up to his weekly press conference, brow furrowed, and spoke of added focus.

"Being with my family, and with friends, and with guys that played for my grandfather, and just listening to their stories again, just reemphasizing to me what a great man he was, and what a wise man he was, and just a true American hero", Brees said. Even for players who weren't on the team's last injury report, the bye week carried plenty of value.

"He was my hero".

But Cam comes alive on the big stage, and with a home crowd comes pressure for a Saints team that hasn't had much play-off football of late. They will run up against the Panthers defense, which is ranked No. 7 in the league.

Well, this season the New Orleans Saints have been running the ball much more than ever, terrorizing the league with the NFL's top running back tandem: Alvin Kamara and former Heisman Trophy victor Mark Ingram. We were picked 6-10, 7-9, 8-8, last in the NFC South. you can look at it that everything we do from here on our is gravy then.

"We've got a fire lit up under us to come out here and play the way we know we're capable of playing", defensive tackle Tyeler Davison said. "This weekend should be a much better showing". They didn't look good in last week's 22-10 loss at Atlanta with the division on the line. Despite the solid game, Coleman will be nothing more than a DFS punt next week in Minnesota. He practiced on a limited basis this week and was listed as questionable.

A critical blow could've been dealt to the Saints chances at completing the season sweep at various points by the Panthers, but one of the driving themes of the day was how often Carolina had to settle for something short of ideal.
