"If Lalu ji had done compromise with BJP, he would be the most truthful person for them like Raja Harishchandra".

It is unclear whether the 69-year-old will be able to walk out of jail in the near future.

The scam is related to withdrawal of Rs 89.27 lakh from the Deogarh Treasury between 1990 and 1994 when Prasad was the chief minister of Bihar.

In the fodder scam case, out of 22 accused, 16 were convicted.

The court also said if he fails to furnish the fine, his jail term would extend by six months.

Meanwhile, Lalu's son and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said that the trial court's decision will be challenged in the high court.

The verdict on Saturday came after two postponements of the pronouncement of the quantum of punishment after the court found the RJD chief guilty in December a year ago.

Prasad's counsel Chittaranjan Sinha said his client would filed an appeal next week against the verdict in the Jharkhand high court.

Last month the anti-corruption court found Yadav guilty of fraudulently withdrawing almost $140,000 from the state treasury in a larger fraud dubbed the "fodder scam", which was worth about 10 billion rupees ($157 million).

The court had, however, acquitted six others including former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra in the case.
