Canadian Blood Services in need of donations

Earlier this month, Canadian Blood Services released an appeal for donors to urgently fill 35,000 appointments by 6 January, and there has been a sharp increase in donations since - but not enough.

The refugees' offering of their time and blood donations comes at an important time as Canada faces an urgent nationwide need for donors, especially over the Christmas and New Year period due to travel, family activities and changes in routines.

Platelets are also collected but this poses a hard challenge because such donations only have a shelf life of seven days, notes the Canadian Blood Services.

MacDonald also says that walk-ins are always welcome especially around this time of year, and says most people are in and out within an hour.

Around 900,000 people gave blood last year, but around 200,000 new blood donors are needed each year to maintain the numbers for life-saving blood donations.
