  • In Christmas message, queen honors cities hit by terror

London, Dec 25 Britain's Queen Elizabeth II reflects on the "appalling" terrorist attacks in London and Manchester this year in her traditional Christmas Day message televised to the Commonwealth.

In her message, the queen will pay tribute to Prince Philip, who stepped down from most public duties because of his advancing years.

"We expect our homes to be a place of safety - sanctuary even - which makes it all the more shocking when the comfort they provide is shattered", she said.

In Manchester a few months later 22 people - including children - were killed when a lone suicide attacker detonated an explosive device as crowds of music fans left Manchester Arena following a performance by USA singer Ariana Grande.

Excerpts released by Buckingham Palace indicate Elizabeth praises the "powerful identities" of Manchester and London.

The crash happened on one of the busiest streets in Moscow near the Slavyanksy Boulevard metro station, Reuters reported. Sobyanin also visited the scene, telling journalists he had ordered a full inspection of the entire Moscow bus fleet.

The Queen's message to the nation and the Commonwealth will look back over the previous 12 months and take "home" as its theme.

"I described that hospital visit as a privilege because the patients I met were an example to us all showing extraordinary bravery and resilience", she said.

She said: "I don't know that anyone had invented the term 'platinum" for a 70th wedding anniversary when I was born.

This year's annual address has been produced by Sky News and was recorded in the palace's 1844 room which is decorated with a large tree and features family photos.
