Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have received numerous reports from Tunisian women claiming to have been delayed, forced to undergo additional screening of their visas, and denied boarding. The decision applied to women and girls of all ages.

He finished the tweet saying the UAE valued and respected Tunisian women, without further elaborating.

That triggered angry reactions on social media and media outlets in Tunisia.

The ban was lifted late Friday.

"The UAE authorities have serious security information about the possibility of terrorist attacks", the Tunisian president's spokesperson Saida Garrach told Shems FM radio, commenting on the recent decision by the UAE to block access to the country for Tunisian women and girls.

"We contacted our Tunisian brothers about security information that necessitated taking specific procedures", Emirati Foreign Minister Anwar Gargash said on Twitter on Sunday.

Since Friday, Tunisian women have reported being banned from Emirates flights to the UAE.

The measure created great controversy, said Saeeda Qarrash, but the UAE feared that women traveling with a Tunisian passport may commit a security act.

Despite the clarification, Tunisian rights groups issued a statement on Saturday condemning the UAE measures as "discriminatory and racist".
