The outgoing president apologized to Hagan nonetheless, and said the comment does not reflect his values or those of the Miss America Organization. "Although this bad situation was not caused or driven by me, in light of recent events and new developments, I am no longer willing to continue in my capacity as president and earlier today offered my resignation to the MAO Board of Directors".
His resignation is effective immediately, while Mr Randle and Ms Weidner will remain for a few weeks to help with the leadership transition.
CEO Sam Haskell resigned from the Atlantic City-based organization on Saturday, a day after he was suspended by the board.
A Miss America Organization spokesman confirmed to ABC News that the board also received and accepted the resignation of the president, Josh Randle, earlier Saturday. Weidner also expressed support for the Miss America Organization.
HuffPost published leaked emails two days before that included a vulgarity to refer to past winners, former winners being routinely maligned, and the shaming of one over her weight and sex life, with Haskell calling her "a piece of trash".
Lamenting the "sickening and egregious words used by Miss America leadership", the 49 women condemned "ongoing efforts to divide our sisterhood" and called for the resignation of four top pageant officials, including Haskell and Friedman.
The emails already cost the pageant its television production partner and raised questions about the future of the nationally televised broadcast from Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall the week after Labor Day each year.
Haskell, in a statement accompanying his suspension on Friday, said the emails cited by the Huffington Post were "conveniently edited".
Ms Shindle, who has written a book which is critical of the Miss America Organisation, said on Twitter that the content of the emails made her "physically ill".
About 1,600 state and local titleholders, contestants and pageant volunteers joined the former Miss America winners in calling for change at the Miss America Organization.
Haskell replied, "Thanks so much Coach.even in my sadness you can make me laugh.how was the Kennedy Center Honors?"
