  • Amidst Republican Attacks, FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe To Reportedly Retire

The money was donated before McCabe was promoted to deputy director and assumed a supervisory role in the Clinton email investigation.

McCabe has come under fire from Republicans over the past year because of the bureau's investigation into the Clinton email issue as well as the probe into possible collusion between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation.

McCabe, the Post reported, "has been the target of Republican critics for more than a year", and "plans to retire in a few months when he becomes fully eligible for pension benefits, according to people familiar with the matter". "90 days to go?!" According to the Virginia Public Access Project, the two major donations that Jill McCabe received, totaling almost $700,000, came from a political action committee of Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat and Clinton friend, and from the Virginia Democratic Party.

Trump originally tweeted about McCabe's wife's campaign in July, inaccurately describing the campaign donation as coming from Clinton: "Problem is that the acting head of the FBI & the person in charge of the Hillary investigation, Andrew McCabe, got $700,000 from H for wife!"

An FBI spokesperson declined to comment.

McCabe spent some 14 hours in closed-door meetings with three House Committees this week - Oversight, Judiciary and Intelligence.

The reports about McCabe's plans, by the Post and the New York Times, come during an especially politically-charged and tense time in the FBI's relationship with the president and Republicans in Congress.

"FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is racing the clock to retire with full benefits", Trump tweeted.

The letters come as Mueller's team is facing heightened scrutiny in recent weeks following reports that two FBI officials who would later be assigned to the special counsel's investigation called Trump an "idiot" and "loathsome human" in a series of text messages a year ago. Trump and his Republican allies have made it clear that they want McCabe out of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"Andy's in a hard position now. because of the hyperpartisan political environment, " John Pistole, who held the FBI's No. 2 job for six years under Mueller, told the Post.

Another letter signed by 22 Republican and conservative former members of Congress and other top USA officials says efforts to discredit Mueller's work "undermine the institutions that protect the rule of law and so our nation".
