Ryanair Christmas strike may go ahead in Ireland, Italy and Portugal

But Ryanair says the soonest it can meet is Wednesday, which is the day of the planned strike.

It will bring certainty to Ryanair passengers travel plans over the Christmas period.

The airline said in a statement: "The Portuguese pilot union has requested a meeting next week and Ryanair has offered to meet them on Thursday December 21".

As of Sunday morning, there has been no response from the unions.

Mr Harbor said IMPACT had spoken to senior Ryanair management, telling them they were ready to meet them at any time.

The threat of a wave of strike action across Europe by Ryanair pilots prompted the airline to make one of the biggest U-turns in its history on Friday.

IMPACT has suspended the action threatened by pilots next Wednesday.

Ryanair made the landmark change in its policy after unionised pilots in Ireland, Portugal, Germany, Italy, and Spain all voted for industrial action in recent weeks.

"Recognising unions will be a significant change for Ryanair, but we have delivered radical change before, most recently when we launched Ryanair Labs and our highly successful Always Getting Better customer improvement programme in 2013".

It is the only time airline boss Michael O'Leary has extended such an invite to union leaders in the 32 years the company has been in business.

The union asked management to release its Ryanair pilot representatives to prepare for and attend the meeting.
