A report from the Daily Caller says that NBC has confirmed that a female staffer accused Matthews of sexual harassment in 1999 and the network settled with her as a result of those accusations. The Caller reported that a spokesperson for the network said the payment was significantly less than $40,000.
Two sources told the Caller that the woman, who was then an assistant producer for Hardball, received a payment of $40,000 after she accused Matthews of making sexual comments to her in the company of other network employees.
An MSNBC spokesman told The Daily Caller that Matthews had been slapped with a formal reprimand at the time. According to the spokesperson, the company concluded that Matthews' remarks were inappropriate, but not intended as propositions.
MSNBC did not confirm if this was the only claim against Matthews nor if the woman left the company exclusively due to this incident. The MSNBC spokesperson said in the email to NBC News that the employee received separation-related compensation but wouldn't elaborate, citing confidentiality.
The report comes just weeks after NBCfired longtime "Today" host Matt Lauer after he was accused of sexual harassment and sexual assault.
Matthews has been the host of "Hardball" since 1997 and also hosted "The Chris Matthews Show" from 2002 to 2013.
The news of the reported settlement comes amid a wave of accusations of sexual misconduct in the entertainment and media industries and others, in what has become a national reckoning of abusive behavior against women by men in positions of power.
This would not be the first time Matthew's off-color comments have made the front page.
On Friday, Fox News reported that NBC News chairman Andy Lack and his embattled deputy, Noah Oppenheim, are scrambling to put new sexual harassment policies in place at NBC News, even as they resist bringing in an outside investigator to look into who knew what about Lauer's behavior and who may have been covering up for him or enabling him.
