Officer Kenneth Copeland Of San Marcos, Texas, Fatally Shot While Serving Warrant

While out serving a warrant December 4, San Marcos police officer Kenneth Copeland was killed after a man allegedly shot him multiple times.

At a news conference, police Chief Chase Stapp said Copeland had been with the department for 19 years. After a standoff with the officers called to the scene, the suspect eventually surrendered and was taken into custody with a gunshot would that was not life-threatening.

Stapp said it was unclear if the wound was self-inflicted or inflicted by police gunfire.

According to the Austin-American Statesman, the officer was serving a warrant at a home near an elementary school when the suspect shot him multiple times.

For people who live in the El Camino Real subdivision in San Marcos, Monday afternoon was met with a slew of of sirens and crime scene tape.

One police officers took him to the Central Texas Medical Center in a police auto where the doctors pronounced him dead at 3:55 p.m.

The community is still grieving the loss of its first officer killed in the line of duty.

A statement from the San Marcos police department reports that the as yet unidentified suspect has also been shot.

"Much like an ambush type of situation", said Stapp. "They are a part of our family as well and they did a great job".

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted the news, and said: "We pray for the family of the San Marcos police officer killed in the line of duty".

"I want to offer my thoughts, my condolences and my prayers for Officer Copeland's family, his wife and his four children, and his family within the walls of this police department", Stapp said.
