The biggest problem with every Nintendo game is they are always Nintendo console exclusives, not counting those free to play mobile games. Not only are the emulators available for its entire back catalogue of machines, but even Wii U games now run pretty smoothly on high-end PC gaming rigs thanks to the popular (and, it must be said, quite complicated) CEMU emulation software.

China's edition of Nvidia Shield, which costs 1,499 yuan (US$226), is a completely localised device, according to Nvidia.

This is the first time Nintendo will allows its games to be run on other platforms.

In one of the more unexpected partnerships of recent years, Nintendo has announced that it's working with hardware manufacturer Nvidia to bring a bunch of Wii and GameCube games to the Nvidia Shield-but only in China. It also puts Nintendo in the company of Nvidia, which has partnered with several government-friendly Chinese companies, as well as Baidu, which powers the voice assistant in the Chinese Nvidia Shield. Wii, and Punch-Out!. All three games were originally available for the Wii almost a decade ago at a measly 480p resolution. The Switch, after all, uses the same Tegra X1 system-on-chip as the Shield TV, and this could be a sign of what's to come.

Some of the company's older games from the discontinued Wii console will appear on the Nvidia Shield console in China.

Nintendo's family-friendly lineup means it may fare better with China's censors.
