  • GM owners can order coffee and more from their dash

The Detroit automaker says the technology, which is rolling out to 4 million cars and trucks in the USA through the end of the year via over-the-air updates, adheres to federal distracted driving guidelines and only works with customer consent because personal data is transferred between the vehicle and merchants to complete sales. What this means, in practical terms, is that drivers of select Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles will be able to use Marketplace to order coffee or food, make reservations for dinner and at hotels, locate the nearest gas stations, and save money on services.

Marketplace is created to be used while driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says distracted driving was responsible for 3,477 fatalities and 391,000 injuries in 2015, the most recent year for which it has data. "We have an opportunity to make every trip more productive and give our customers time back".

The U.S. auto manufacturing giant plans to utilize its in-car Marketplace connections to increase sales of products and services, including access to in-car Wi-Fi, from its own dealer network.

California wildfire: mass evacuation in Ventura country
The fire erupted near Santa Paula, a city of some 30,000 people about 60 miles (97 kilometers) northwest of Los Angeles. The fire also struck some key transmission lines, knocking out power to tens of thousands of customers.

GM said in the announcement that it plans to add Marketplace to "millions of existing 2017 and 2018" vehicles' infotainment systems, so long as the systems are compatible with the app and the cars have wifi hotspots. "For most retailers and consumer brands, the daily commute is the only time not accessible in a consumer's day", Chamorro said, in the release. It leverages machine-learning from real-time interaction data, such as location, time of day and a driver's established digital relationship with third-party merchants, to offer personalized experiences.

Drivers or passengers can select the Marketplace icon through the vehicle's infotainment system to select food, fuel info, and more with just a few swift taps on the screen. Yes, GM owners can now order and pay for chicken wings from their dashboard. GM will get paid for placing a merchant's application on its screens, and "there's some level of revenue sharing" based on each transaction, he said.

The Marketplace initially will include brands such as Dunkin' Donuts and TGI Fridays, as well as a GM store, in which users can schedule maintenance or order accessories for their cars. However, customers will not have to pay for the service or data used for these services.

UCF names Josh Heupel as new head coach
It's a nice fit for both sides. "I'm very excited to get a staff together and get to work with our wonderful student-athletes". Heupel, however, is looking forward to the task ahead. "We need to play smart football but we also have to be physical".

Other restaurants, like Applebee's, IHOP and TGI Friday's, will let motorists make reservations through the Marketplace, which is linked to the cloud through a vehicle's built-in 4G LTE WiFi service.

For companies that want to begin using the platform, GM is working with three tech partners to provide integrations: Xevo, Conversable, and Sionic Mobile.
