  • Conyers Steps Down From Top Judiciary Committee Role Amid Ethics Probe

Democrat Rep. John Conyers of Mich., who faces allegations of sexual harassment, said he is stepping aside as ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee while an ethics investigation is pending.

Conyers, whose MI district includes half of Detroit, is the last member of either house of Congress to have served under President Lyndon Johnson in the 1960s.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi dodged questions about whether Rep. John Conyers should resign following revelations that he settled a 2015 complaint with a former staffer who claimed she was sacked after refusing his sexual advances. "I can not in good conscience allow these charges to undermine my colleagues in the Democratic Caucus, and my friends on both sides of the aisle in the Judiciary Committee and the House of Representatives".

Pelosi suggested Sunday that the allegations against Franken - including that he kissed a woman against her will - were less serious than those against Moore, who is accused by one woman of sexual advances toward her when she was 14.

Ms Pelosi declined to say whether Mr Conyers would suffer any immediate penalty over the allegations.

Conyers, 88, of Michigan's 13th Congressional District, said he notified "the Democratic Leader" of his request as allegations that he sexually harassed female staff members are being investigated.

Judiciary Committee's ranking member, pending the outcome of the ethics probe.

She repeatedly said that she wants to see the House Ethics Committee investigation of Conyers play out.

He has rejected calls for his resignation and so has the House's top Democrat - for now.

"We are strengthened by due process", Pelosi said on Meet the Press.

Conyers, who has served in Congress since the 1960s, has been embattled since a BuzzFeed report this week.

MI congressman John Conyers is giving up his leadership position as top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee.

The flurry of activity Sunday comes as Congress prepares to return from its Thanksgiving break, amid increasing attention on the issue of sexual harassment with multiple men in entertainment, media and politics facing allegations of misconduct. "That is women are saying zero tolerance, no more, and we're going to speak out on it".
