As large retailers deal with the onslaught of Black Friday shoppers, locally owned stores have been preparing for a shopping holiday of their own - Small Business Saturday.

That's the simple logic behind Small Business Saturday, slated this year for November 25 - the day after its better-known sibling, Black Friday. It is traditionally one of the busiest holiday shopping weekends of the year.

American Express's Neighborhood Champions help rally 10 or more small businesses to participate in the day, organize community events and promote the Shop Small concept by distributing merchandise such as tote bags provided by American Express.

Almost 99 percent of all employers in the state are small businesses, which vitally influences the local economy. You could go to the mall and buy a sweater that looks like all the other sweaters, or you can reach out to local, black-owned stores to get something really unique. Although big box stores are still responsible for majority of the holiday shoppers.

"There are going to be a lot of Black Friday sales here, too", Skaare said. Many small businesses are happy to ship your gifts for free. "We are proud to act as an incubator for startup brands and small businesses by providing them the space and tools they need to flourish within the park and our community". Seven years later and Wichita Falls entrepreneurs and customers are already making the most it, even a day in advance.

A great way to buy what you want and knock out a holiday gift at the same time, for every $100 of merchandise purchased, Edge of Urge will provide a $10 gift card.

Zanu-PF wants Mugabe impeachment 'done and dusted by Thursday'
On Sunday, Mugabe was sacked as Zanu-PF party leader and replaced by one-time comrade turned arch-rival Mnangagwa. That would complicate any efforts to install Emmerson Mnangagwa as president, as many Zimbabweans expect.

Shopping local on Saturday is a way to thank these people for taking that risk on Williston, and helping contribute to the community's quality of life, Skaare added. Participating Chamber member businesses include Cedartown's Holmes for Her, Holmes Clothing, Bussey's Florist and Gifts, and Rockmart's The Perch on Marble, Morgan ACE Hardware, Now and Then, and Smith & Lockwood.
