  • Pistorius shot Ms Steenkamp in 2013

Judges in South Africa increased the jail sentence for Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius to 13 years and five months, more than doubling his original sentence for killing his girlfriend.

Pistorius was then sentenced to six years for murder by Masipa, a decision also now rejected by the Supreme Court.

Pistorius killed Steenkamp in the pre-dawn hours of Valentine's Day 2013 after shooting four times through a closed toilet cubicle door with his 9 mm pistol.

At the same time, Steenkamp's parents have sent their love to Jayde Panayiatou's parents after her husband, Chris, was sentenced to life in prison for her murder.

In July 2016, South Africa's National Prosecuting Agency deemed the sentence "shockingly too lenient", announcing plans to appeal for a longer sentence.

The Supreme Court of Appeal ruled his sentence be increased to 15 years, less time already served. There is no death penalty in South Africa.

Pistorius' legal counsel said the claims that his client is not remorseful are false.

Pistorius, the first amputee runner to compete in the Summer Olympics at the London 2012 Games, was banned by the International Paralympic Committee for five years in 2014 when his murder trial began.

The new sentence was backdated to start on the day he began his murder sentence, on July 6 past year.

Moments before sentencing was handed down in the Port Elizabeth High Court in Panayiotou's case, the SCA in Bloemfontein handed down a judgment changing Pistorius's jail term. Pistorius won't be eligible for parole for at least six years. Investigators nearly immediately presented a different version of events, as neighbors heard a loud quarrel in Pistorius' house and called the police two hours before the tragedy.

But even though State prosecutors managed to get it upgraded to murder, only one extra year was added to the sentence. Pistorius might now be moved back to a higher security facility.
