  • Uber hacked, data for 57 million people exposed

Uber paid hackers $100,000 to keep secret a massive breach past year that exposed the personal information of about 57 million accounts of the ride-service provider, the company has said.

CEO Travis Kalanick, who was in charge when the hack took place, is still on the company's board of directors.

Khosrowshahi said he had only recently learned of the breach, which happened in October 2016.

It's worth pointing out that while the company is now alerting the authorities, California's data security breach notification law requires disclosure in "the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay".

News of the hack came in an extraordinary admission by the USA firm's chief executive on Tuesday that revealed a third-party server had been infiltrated in late 2016.

Uber says it paid hackers $100,000 after they stole data a year ago on 57 million of its users.

Khosrawshahi adds, "while I can't erase the past, I can commit on behalf of every uber employee that we will learn from our mistakes".

"Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi's statement that there is no excuse for what happened and Uber will be putting integrity and trust at the core of every business decision is a welcome message", he said.

Khosrowshahi said he had moved proactively to address the issue, firing two of the security staff that led the response to the incident and engaging cybersecurity consultant Matt Olsen to revitalised the company's cybersecurity response plans.

United Kingdom authorities were unaware of a mass data breach at Uber that potentially put British customers' personal details into the hands of cyber criminals.

Uber said it was obliged to report the theft of the drivers' license information and had failed to do so.

Now, though, in addition to yet another hit to its reputation with consumers, Uber faces a mountain of legal hurdles as state prosecutors launched investigations Wednesday and members of Congress called on the Federal Trade Commission to take action.

Bloomberg News first reported the data breach yesterday.

The concerns are not only limited to the breach itself; the strongest ire is coming from regulators over how Uber handled the cyberattack.

"I'm just used to these breaches all the time; unfortunately it's a common occurrence", said traveler Ryan Eytcheson who was jumping in his Uber after flying in from Los Angeles.

Swedish automaker Volvo in the contract will put Uber at about 24,000 vehicles equipped with unmanned technologies. Uber is already testing 200 of the automaker's cars in San Francisco, Pittsburgh and Tempe, Ariz.

Uber has set up a website for users who have been affected.

Attorneys general in at least three states, including MA and NY, have already launched investigations into the hack.

Two employees responsible for the hack were fired by the company. It was also in blue moon due to the sexual harassment case.

Regulators in Australia and the Philippines said they would look into the matter. This week, the ride-hailing firm ousted its chief security officer and one of his deputies for their roles in keeping the hack under wraps, which included a $100,000 payment to the attackers.
