  • Here Are the Best and Worst Times to Travel for Thanksgiving

Southern California residents will travel in greater numbers for the Thanksgiving holiday this year than at any time since Thanksgiving 2007, with 3.87 million residents expected to get away for the long weekend - a 3.6 percent increase over last year's 3.74 million travelers, the Automobile Club of Southern California said.

"A strong economy and labor market are generating rising incomes and higher consumer confidence, fueling a strong year for the travel industry, which will continue into the holiday season, added Ocasio even though gas prices may be more this holiday season".

The forecast for increased travel comes despite higher gas prices. This week, the statewide average increased 1.2 cents to $2.409 per gallon.

The number of Marylanders flying for Thanksgiving is expected to grow by 4.7 percent, the largest increase of any mode of transportation. Prices this year are likely to be the highest since 2014, but should be lower than what motorists were paying earlier this month. Overall, travel for the holiday weekend is expected to be busier than past year. Although Idaho gas prices have been among the highest in the country in recent years, a nine-cent increase over the past month brings the US average to within a dime of Idaho pump prices.

Travelers can expect to spend any "flight savings" on vehicle rentals. The 1.2 percent increase represents 335 more travelers than a year ago, and the most since 2008.

AAA said that most Maryland and DE travelers are expected to drive to their destinations. That is the highest number of travelers since 2005, and it's up 3.3 percent from last Thanksgiving.
