Mueller Probing Alleged Flynn Plan to Deliver Cleric to Turkey

  • The cleric Fethullah Gulen was considered a political enemy to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Flynn is accused of meeting with senior Turkish officials in December, a few weeks before Trump's inauguration, to discuss the return of Gulen, who is a rival of Turkish President Recep Erdogan.

In September, the Wall Street Journal reported that Rohrabacher offered Trump a deal that to protect Julian Assange, creator of WikiLeaks, which released emails damaging to Hillary Clinton ahead of the 2016 election, from legal peril.

The meeting was held at New York City's 21 Club.

Mueller's interest in the nature of Flynn and Rohrabacher's discussion marks the first known time a member of Congress could be wrapped into the investigation. "All allegations that Turkey would resort to means external to the rule of law for his extradition are utterly false, ludicrous and groundless".

One source said Gülen would be seized and flown by private jet to the Turkish prison island of Imrali. It isn't clear how advanced Mr. Mueller's investigation of the alleged plan to remove Mr. Gulen is, nor is there any indication that any money changed hands, according to those familiar with the discussions and the FBI investigation. But by mid-December Trump had named Flynn national security adviser and he was playing a central role in the transition.

The NBC News report said the evidence was related to Flynn's lobbying work throughout the latter half of 2016 - while he was a top Trump campaign surrogate - for a businessman with ties to the Turkish government.

The fact that Flynn never registered as a foreign agent of Turkey - much like Manafort didn't register for doing work for Ukraine before he worked for Trump - gives fuel to a federal grand jury to indict him for that very omission.

The special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating an alleged plan that Michael Flynn, the former White House national security adviser, discussed with the Turkish government to forcibly remove a Muslim cleric from the US, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

Mick Cash, general secretary of the RMT Union, said: "These strikes are about rail safety and accessibility pure and simple".

Flynn had been fired by Trump after just 24 days into the job for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about the extent of his conversations with then Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak previous year.

"If the facts involving Flynn and his son are true, or even mostly true, it indicates an incredible propensity for outrageously illegal conduct", said Ryan Goodman, a NY law professor and former Pentagon counsel.

Flynn's attorneys responded to the report Friday, denying the claims.

Flynn resigned almost three weeks after Sally Yates, the acting attorney general at the time, warned the White House that Flynn could be vulnerable to Russian blackmail over his conversations with Russia's ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak.
