  • US Senator Rand Paul's ribs broken in assault at home

A man was arrested and charged with assaulting and injuring Rand Paul.

"Senator Paul has five rib fractures including three displaced fractures", Doug Stafford, a senior adviser to Mr Paul, said in a statement reported by U.S. media.

The statement by Rene Boucher's attorney notes Boucher and Paul were two physicians who worked together when they were practicing, according to CBS News.

Sen. Rand Paul calls it an "unfortunate event".

McConnell on Monday wished his fellow Kentuckian a speedy recovery from the attack Friday that left Paul with five broken ribs.

"Senator Paul has five rib fractures including 3 displaced fractures". Senior Adviser Doug Stafford said the senator is in considerable pain and has difficulty getting around, including flying.

Asked if he might have to delay some votes, McConnell said: "I haven't had a chance to check with him (Paul) yet today about it".

"It was a very regrettable dispute between two neighbors over a matter that most people would regard as trivial", it read, one which apparently had "nothing to do with" politics.

According to online records from the county jail, Boucher was released on a $7,500 bond on Saturday after spending almost 24 hours in the facility.

Paul's office initially downplayed the injuries as "minor".

The arrest warrant in the case indicates that Paul told police that his neighbor came onto his property and tackled him from behind, forcing him to the ground and causing pain.

At the time of the assault, Paul had "trouble breathing due to a potential rib injury", according to a criminal complaint filed in Warren County District Court.

Boucher admitted to the crime and was released on Sunday on a $5,000 bond. He sold his invention on QVC, the home shopping channel. Online records state that Boucher's party affiliation is Democrat.

The Kentucky State Police told Fox News they are still running an active and open investigation and just learned of Paul's condition.

The FBI is assisting state and local authorities to see whether there were any violations of federal law, but an FBI spokesman declined to comment Monday on a possible motive.
