Police in Rockford say an officer has died following a traffic stop that led to a shooting.

They also discovered a auto crash about two blocks away from the initial traffic stop with a dead body inside.

Cox "made a brief radio transmission indicating he needed assistance", according to O'Shea.

"Officers also located a deceased suspect inside the auto that crashed", Rockford Police Chief Dan O'Shea said.

Cox was hurried to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where he was articulated dead, O'Shea said.

The cause of death for both Cox and Patterson have not yet been determined; autopsies are pending with the Winnebago County coroner's office.

Events enclosing the deaths were unclear, and officials did not issue any report about the nature of the wounds Cox nurtured. O'Shea later would not state whether Cox or the other individual was lethally shot, yet trusted a shooting occurred.

Chief Dan O'Shea says more information will be released following a news conference at 8:00 a.m. "The area is still blocked off of the incident, the detectives are out there working".
