Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and one of its founding members Mukul Roy, who had once served as the railway minister, on Friday joined the BJP, lending a thrust to the party's drive to expand its base in Mamata Banerjee-ruled West Bengal.
Talking to the reporters over his new innings, Mr Mukul Roy said that he is privileged to get a chance to work under PM Narendra Modi.
Roy, who was long the second most powerful leader of the TMC, claimed that people of West Bengal wanted an alternative to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and will vote the BJP to power in the next polls. As we all know that the BJP is growing at a fast pace in Bengal, Roy's induction will strengthen the party in the state. I believe the BJP is not a communal force but a secular force.
BJP leaders expect Roy's entry will give party's prospect a fillip in West Bengal, where it is trying to build a robust organisation to match that of Trinamool and the Left front. "TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had made her way to the Lok Sabha with the BJP's backing", he noted. "In the near future, the BJP will come to power in West Bengal", Roy said. "We welcome him", said Prasad.
Roy, a founder member of the Trinamool Congress, quit the party on September 25.
In him, BJP might have got an organisational man who has a reach deep inside the TMC - this is probably why Roy was inducted into the party rather than being encouraged to set up his own outfit and ally with the NDA.
Biswanath Chakraborty, a professor of political science at Kolkata's Rabindra Bharati University, had early said Roy's defection would be a bigger gain for the BJP than a loss for the Trinamool Congress, coming ahead of the 2018 panchayat election. "With Roy joining the BJP, it has been proved that the two parties are two sides of the same coin", CPI (M) MP Mohammed Salim said. He had recently quit Trinamool and was likely to join their major rivals in West Bengal, he was earlier today welcomed into the BJP at the party's headquarters in the capital in the presence of its president Amit Shah. BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya was also present on the occasion.
