SWIM Across the Sound raises money to help patients and their families and to help more women get screened for breast cancer.

Some familiar faces from NewsChannel7 were also at the 5K walk in support of those who have lost their life to breast cancer and for those who are still battling.

"I am a three year survivor, Whoo", Wikerson said. "They are why we are here; they are our main focus", said Kelley Gifford, community development manager for the American Cancer Society.

These rates highlight the importance of detecting breast cancer early when treatments are more effective.
